Beginning May 7, TSA will no longer accept state-issued IDs that do not meet REAL ID standards. While Congress approved stricter federal regulations for ID issuance back in 2005, enforcement of these rules has been delayed multiple times.
On Friday, TSA announced that starting next month, passengers aged 18 and older who lack passports or enhanced identification may experience delays, undergo extra screening, and potentially be denied entry to the security checkpoint.
The extent to which TSA will enforce the new regulations remains uncertain. U.S. airlines are already facing concerns about reduced demand due to international tariff issues and broader economic challenges.
In December 2022, TSA delayed the enforcement deadline for “REAL ID” requirements, extending it until May 2025.
The 2005 law implemented the recommendation of the September 11, 2001, commission, urging the U.S. government to establish standards for issuing identification documents, including driver’s licenses. The law sets basic security requirements for the issuance and production of these IDs.
